Kolliwobbles. . . but also other fun things

Well - we're home . . . after  an interesting trip.

We added a day to our itinerary because Paul had the kolliwobbles at Marcia and Hal's. (I called Sharon and she didn't know what it was . . .I felt badly because I worried her until I explained it:  My family always said we had the kolliwobbles when we caught a 24 hour bug.  Perhaps you've heard of it? )

Paul got sick in the middle of Wednesday night and spent a sleepless unpleasant night, so we postponed our leaving on Thursday so he could rest and sleep.  Friday, he felt fine and we were able to continue on our journey.   Marcia, Hal and I didn't get sick.  Thank goodness.  We considered food poisoning, but we all ate the same things.

I called Edna and Mike from Marcia's and cancelled our luncheon date which would then have been on Saturday.  We didn't want to spread any germs to them.  We try to see Mike and Edna for lunch when we come through their area.

We planned a nice trip up north.  We left Venice Sunday morning and spent Sunday night with Greg, Noi and the family.   We're still planning on when they can come up this summer!  Nee Nee and Brenan have such a busy schedule.

Monday, we left their house in Gainesville and traveled on to Savannah.  I had never been there and wanted to see it.  I had heard how beautiful it was, and it is!

We found a trolley company that would let us take Gracie on board, and we had a 90 minute tour.  There were 18 stops.  Three of the stops had costumed actors portraying special characters: a woman ghost dressed in antebellum style, a pirate, and Johnny Mercer.   We stopped at  a great shopping center down by the river and next time when we have more time, I'd like to stop there.

Tuesday through Thurday we were at Marcia and Hal's in eastern North Carolina. Wednesday,  we visited the Estuarium, where Marcia has volunteered for ten years!  We had a guide through part of it, and then saw a short film about the estuary.  Afterwards we went for lunch to a restaurant called On the Waterfront.  They had a lovely porch where we sat and enjoyed the view.   Perfectly lovely.  And, yes, Paul and I had the same thing on the menu.

We stayed in Chambersburg Friday night.  Early Saturday afternoon, we got to Corning, had a nice lunch at Wegman's Super Market, ate at one of their outdoor tables. Then I did food shopping.  We were both tired by the time suppertime came around so we had the second half of the huge sub we had for lunch.

Today we're unpacking, doing wash, making clutter of suitcases, etc.  around the house.  The usual day-after-a-trip thing.

It's good to be home, but I miss Florida and our friends and relatives.

Especially Bob.  We did so many things with him.  Martini and Gracie will have an adjustment period too.  Bob and Martini have a trip planned in late June for a visit - that'll be good.

Now I have to relearn where everything is or goes. Especially in the kitchen.  Same as I do when I get to Florida.  There's an adjustment time.

We couldn't have come back on a more beautiful day or weekend.  Rare blue skies.  Puffy clouds.  The forsythia are in full bloom, and Paul put some daffodils in a glass for me.  The grass is green, the buds on the trees are ready to burst.  The hills are still brown, but the lower parts are green.  That'll creep up as the days keep getting warm.  We got here just in time.  The grass doesn't need mowing yet, but soon.  Perhaps tomorrow.

My little car is working well.

Okay, time to put a new load of wash in the washing machine.

My grandson Vincent will have his 7th birthday tomorrow.  I will be talking with him then.  Remember how exciting those days were when we had birthdays???  Nancy said Walter slept through the night (til 5 AM) the other night.  That's a milestone.

How're things goin' in your neck o' the woods?

Visiting Grandkids . .

Wednesday

Still am having difficulty getting on my blog, but at least I can get on through Facebook.  Strange.  I haven't had problems like this before.  I think it's all fixed though.  I got through tonight the regular way.

I didn't mention Evie and Vincent in my last post, so I will now.

Vincent and I played numerous card games, board games and a game called quirkle -which includes wooden tile pieces of six shapes and different colors.  The idea is to put them in order according to shape or color.  It is fun and I enjoy playing it with him.  Vincent keeps score - sometimes accurately, sometimes not.  It amazes me the amount of math he does.  He's six going on seven in two weeks. I left some birthday presents, plus some more for him.  .  He's fun to talk to.  Dan spends a lot of time with him doing things.  Explaining things.

Nancy and I took Evie and Walter to an enclosed mall on Saturday.  (She usually goes to one that is open/air.)  Walter really cooperated.  He was asleep when we left home and was still asleep when we got home - four hours later!  Nancy and Walter discovered  this mall a week ago when it was a rainy day and they wanted to get out.  It has a play area for young children ages 1-7 and she thought it would be perfect for Evie.  It consisted of a two-story  "tree" that had small slides and stairs around  the bottom of the trunk.  Evie loved it.   Afterwards we went through Macy's, took an elevator up to the second floor, and went to a Western style restaurant.  It had a great kids menu, and had mini-shots of desserts that we three had. (tiny ice cream sundaes.  Evie takes after her grandmother.) Walter slept  the whole time, even the trip home!

Evie had missed her nap time, but managed to stay awake, barely,  until she got home, 35 minutes later.  She is talking a lot now, but is still hard to understand.  She does a lot of repeating words, but when she explains things or does her own speaking sometimes it's hard to know what she's saying.  She's all girl.  She and I  had a tea party in the living room, where she served me meat and juice.

I took both of them outside before dinner time. Vincent and Evie took turns kicking his soccer ball around.   Evie colored with sidewalk chalk.  The weather turned out to be beautiful - nearly seventy degrees!

So now I'm back home with Paul.  I sure missed him!  Next time he's coming with me to meet his new grandson.  That'll be over Memorial Day Weekend.

We had a big rainstorm late yesterday afternoon.  It really flooded the road outside our house and the back yard.     The grass in the back, had really grown and the dogs, Martini and Gracie, have been  coming in,  from running outside, with grass "seeds" attached to their fur underneath.  They don't reach too high and when they run outside, these grass seeds attach very easily and then they need to be combed to get rid of them. Usually it happens in the Fall, not in the Spring.  Anyway - the grass was mowed today..  The mowers usually come on Tuesdays, but they finally came this morning. They weren't here yesterday or last week.

So - that's all the news from the woods edge.  What's happenin' in your neck o' the woods?

All is okay. Phew.

I didn't lose my blog!  Perhaps I wrote in all caps. Who knows.    Don't know the reason I wasn't able to get on, but - glad I'm still on line - after 490 posts.  I can remember how I thought that 100 were marvelous.500 will be really something.  I'll let you all know when that happens.  Very soon!

Seems like a long time since I last wrote, but I'm sure it was last week.  When I'm away, it seems like a long time that I've been away. But it was only a weekend!  What a great time I had.

I met baby Walter.  What a cutey.  He'll be two months old on the 18th.  When I got into the house, Nancy put him on his changing table, and he and I had a little conversation about how wonderful he was.  He kept cooing and looking very interestingly at my face. Nancy recorded it all on her IPad.  Or is it IPod?

Walter had his fussy times when I was there and it reminded me of how much time a little baby takes out of mommy's day and night.  It's obvious that they're so vulnerable, but the time out of the day and night that they command attention is amazing .   My goodness, you forget until you're "there" again what it entails.   I kind of do remember it, but the first couple of months of my children's lives are a blur to me.  It was so long ago.

There's a consensus around that he looks like his Uncle Jeff and his Uncle Bill.  Both sides of the family.   I was wise to get him  3-6 month size clothing.  They fit beautifully.

My trip there was uneventful.  I had treated myself to a "special seat" up near the front.  I was also in Group 1 to board which made me very happy, but after I saw how many elderly, disabled, and parents with young children were on the flight, first class, priority class, I wasn't so enthusiastic.  There went two-thirds of the flight before me. Oh, well.  It was amusing.  It was nice to be up front though.

The trip home was eventful, unfortunately.   I got to O'Hare airport at 8:15 - in plenty of time, settled in at the gate with some Starbucks decaf and a nice muffin. And a good book on my Kindle.  My flight was scheduled for 10:00, giving me an hour between flights  in Atlanta.   I was there about 45 minutes and they changed the gate - only two gates down.  Good.  But they changed the times to 10:25, which meant I would need to really race to get to my second one.

I talked with the gate attendant and she assured me that I wouldn't have to worry about my next flight.  I had 40 minutes.  Oh?  They said they'd be in Atlanta by 1:17.  My flight was at 2:00.  Of course, like most eventful flights - it was late getting there - landing at 1:25, at Gate D32.  I needed to be at Gate B5.  before 2:00.  Ridiculous.  Well - I "raced" down the terminal, took the escalator down, got on the tram, took the escalator up to B terminal, raced up B from gate 30 to 5.  I was the next to the last person on the flight.  Seat 30D.  The stewardess walked behind me and closing  up the baggage compartments as I went by.  My carry on baggage had to be checked.

Paul and Gracie waited in the cellphone lot and met me outside the baggage claim area.  He said she moped around after I left.  She was very happy to see me.  Paul had been busy this weekend getting ready for our trip home.  He brought the patio furniture into the new lemon room (not sure what to call it now that it's not a lanaii, although we had lunch on the patio furniture and Paul said it still had the feeling of a lanaii.) He put up some plantation blinds.  They look really good.  I'm pleased with them.

Everything is getting less congested down here.  I can see how the Floridians love their "time off" in the summer.  I know Alice always says it's nice at the pool, and how she's gotten used to this time of the year when Florida is for the Floridians.  Bob says that too.  But, it's gotten HOT now.  I understand it's a near record temperature. So it's not usual for it to be 90-95 at this time of the year.   Air-conditioning is a must today.  Paul was outside doing weeding, trimming bushes this morning, but I think he'll be inside the rest of the day.  If he's smart.  And I know he is.

I'm busy unpacking, doing wash - the usual things that happen at the end of a trip.  I have more to write, and I will.

It was fun to read all the responses on Facebook about my packing for my trip.  Neat.  I don't get responses very often from my blog, but the ones I do, I appreciate.

So - that's not all the news from the Woods Edge, but I'm done for now.  What's happenin in your neck o the woods?
I just had a writing scare.  I couldn't get into BlogSpot and I couldn't get into my blog.  The Woods Edge Crew?  They'd never heard of it.  All I could think of was, oh, my goodness, there goes three or four years of writing down the drain - 12,500 times people have read it.   but then I remembered Facebook.  I kept scrolling down until I found my latest blog and I was able to get on by that.  Now, what I'm going to do is publish just this paragraph to see if I am truly "back on line."

An All-Day Post

Read my last post and remember writing it at night.  Today - it's mid-morning, my usual time. And then I find I've added onto it as the day's gone by.

I got up later than usual, 8:30, so my day's kinda starting late.  Luckily it's  Monday.  I've come to like mornings as much as Mondays. . . I look forward to the happenings of the rest of the day as much as the rest of the week.

I mentioned last time that the time is flying by.  It's true.  Less than two weeks now til we leave.  The time's tumbling over itself.  Rushing.  Carol O leaves this Friday by auto-train.  She'll stop in Pennsylvania to visit her son Matt and his family and arrive home in Bath on Monday.

Friday's the same day I'm flying to Chicago.  I'm staying until Monday.  I'll see my little grandson Walter.  I can't wait.

Paul is now painting the back of our house.  We both liked it the grey color of the natural stucco on the new room, but Circlewoods wants everything to be white.  The Pretty Committee (I can't remember their real name) happens to be doing its rounds today with clipboards and paper. Letters will go to people who don't comply with the Red Book rules.  Some people complain, but I don't mind, because that keeps the place nice.

Someone on Bob's circle painted the front panels of their house a lime green.  They'll certainly get a "letter."  Would you believe. . .they'd done it before.  They were here for a short two weeks and painted it lime green again.  You'd think they'd understand. But as Bob says, maybe they're testing the situation.   We've gotten a letter  up north, in the summer, about weeds.  Now that Bill and Epril are no longer here, we'll have to hire someone to  keep our place looking nice.  I'll have to ask around.

It's supposed to go up to 85 today.  But this morning, it's nice, comfortable and shady in the back where he's painting.  Perhaps that'll be the afternoon temps.  Time to go to the pool.  Me, anyway.  Paul's nervous about the sun and rightly so.   The sun's so different down here from up North - even in the summertime there. You have to be very careful.  As Carol says - she can get a tan here in three days, while it takes all summer up there.

Speaking of Carol, reminds me that her sister, Patti, sent us six pictures of Paul when we went on the boat ride.  Five are for his children and one for me!  Paul has this great smile and it shows up so well in the picture.

I met Carol at the pool this afternoon between two and three. It was lovely, but the sun became too hot.  I only stayed for an hour.  Carol had a great idea for her car - bring a black plastic bag and put it on the seat when you leave the pool to go home.  It keeps the seat dry from a wet suit! Towels are okay, but they're usually damp or wet.  I tried the plastic bag and it worked.

We went to the Moose Club for lunch today and who should be there but Bob and Sue - whose pontoon boat we were on . . . where the pictures were taken!  Bob and Sue were there with friends from their development who are Moose Club members.  I think Bob and Sue might join.

We  went to Contemporary early church with Bob yesterday at 9:00.  It was Holy Communion and the Lord's Prayer was part of it.  Paul couldn't help but give me a nudge.  Don't know if I told you but I miss The Lord's Prayer at this service.  Yes, I  remember writing about that, now that I think about it.

Gracie is whining to go outside with Paul, but she already had paint on her long ears from when he  painted part of the new room yesterday and we thought it best she stay away from wet paint.

We went out for ice cream last night with Gracie.  Afterwards, Paul took us to the beach where we watched the sunset. We sat on wooden stairs going onto the sand. (No dogs allowed on the beach.) This was the first time this season, and I forgot how beautiful it can be to see the sun "sinking down into  the water." And how quickly it is gone. Groups of people on the jetty, the docks, the beaches.  Not particularly crowded.  Like the roads.  Lots of Snowbirds have left.

Bob is going with us to Punta Gorda Thursday to see Epril and Bill. It'll probably be the last time we'll see them before we go north. They've planned a nice day for us to see an outdoor mall they "discovered" in Fort Myers.

This past weekend Bill and Epril went to Busch Gardens with friends.  They have season passes.  They're really a great bargain for Florida residents.  Bob and Christine's family have had them for Disney World.

My gardenia bush out front looks just great.  There are many blooms.  I have to cut some of the old ones off and bring one inside for the dining room table. I have to dust every day due to the dust from the new room.   The gardenias smell so good.  I don't know why but it reminds me of what sugary milk would taste like if I ever tried it.

Okay.  I guess soon it'll be time to hunt for my list from coming down.  Or I'll have to make up a new one.  That wouldn't be a bad idea.  Whatever.

We have two graduations on the same weekend in June - Lee's and Maddie's.   It'll be busy for sure.

So - how're things goin' in your neck o' the woods?

Busy? Yessirree!

Okay.  It's 9:00 - usually we're winding down the day here, but I got a request to add Bob's daughter, my niece, Christine, to my list of readers, and I/we got an e-mail from Lue asking why I hadn't blogged lately, that she missed it.  Darn!  It's good to be missed!

As I always say, or I should say, I try not to say too often, it does my heart good.

Lue's daughter Gail and son-in-law bought a place on Sanibel Island.  That's not too far from us.  Within a day's trip.  How nice!

So - Yes.  We've been busy, Lue.

First. . . .  Paul - you should see the work he's been doing on the lanai!  We now have a pocket door where we had a sliding glass door into our computer room.  The sliding glass door into the dining room has been eliminated, and Paul has made the opening bigger.  (Yes, I know.  I should send pictures, and I will try again.  You should see how difficult it is for me to do things that require other than typing.  Really.)  Paul can attest to that.  Back to the main subject of this paragraph work on the lanai - Paul has really created dust this week.  And banging noise.  Gracie is starting to get upset.  It has taken her a while to either get upset, or just tired of all the noise.  It really is a racket. Gracie was shaking her head.   I wonder . . .with the big ears, does it affect her and Martini more?  I wonder.

Bob is busy next door putting in new screening on his lanai.  Plus he's done a lot of "landscaping" with new hanging baskets of flowers.  It really looks nice from our house.  Speaking of Bob - he brought some Sam's Club canned chicken here at lunchtime and I made us all chicken salad sandwiches.  And we finished up the lemon cake I made for Alice's birthday yesterday.  I had thought it would last us days and days.  Well, it didn't.

Alice's birthday:  Our littlest, no. . .that's wrong. . . our youngest cousin just turned 70.  (I'm the littlest - in height, not width.)  So we all went to lunch at the same place we celebrated my birthday on the 22nd.  Had a delightful time.  With Cuz Carol, and Alice's next door neighbor, Betty, who is in her mid 80's, or is it closer to 90?  Such a warm, nice person.  Bob, Paul and I rounded up the round table - outside under the canope/awning trellis.

My days are going by so quickly.  Today is an example.  I secretly planned to go to Curves this morning.  I haven't been in a long time because Paul and I have been walking.  He's been so busy lately though.  (duh) I got all my things ready: extra shoes to change into, my pocketbook with everything in it,  and then I realized that I hadn't done my bills and time was going by.  So I plopped my stuff on a chair in the living room, got my stuff spread out on the dining room table, and proceeded to write all my checks, put them in envelopes, put return addresses on them.  Then I had to balance my checkbook..  I looked at the clock and it was noontime. And Bob was offering the chicken.  Thus went the morning.

I had a nice conversation with my six-year old grandson Vincent on Easter.  It's fun to talk with him because he's at an age to carry on a good conversation.  I got a kick out of the fact that he remembered so much about Sharon's boys from last summer.  They were so kind and good to him. Lee is graduating from high school, and Charles will be a junior this coming year.   Vincent talked about the fact that Lee was outside playing catch with Charlie and him, and Lee didn't have his shoes on!  (Heaven forbid!) He almost sprained his ankle, too.   The things kids remember.  "And, Grandma Jeanne, when we come visit this summer will Charlie and Lee be there?"  I assured him they would.  And that I would see him soon.  I have tickets to fly up to Chicago and visit for the weekend and see my little grandson Walter.  And what would Vincent like for his birthday, which is two weeks after that?

This afternoon, we went to Habitat for Humanity to give them the sliding doors and the window into the kitchen.  We took Gracie with us.  Then we stopped at Lowe's where Paul got a couple of more pieces of sheetrock.  And then to Publix - a different one than we usually go to.  Paul took Gracie for a walk and sat outside while I went inside and shopped.  We got home and it was 3:30.  My other secret plan was to the pool this afternoon.  Couldn't.  Didn't have enough time.  Although the weather has been sunny and bright, it's been cool for March.  Haven't been to the pool much at all.

There's always tomorrow.  But I can't say that for much longer.  Time is going fast and we'll be starting back up North.  Carol O and I are lamenting that fact.  But - it will be good to see everyone up there.  I find the closer I get to leaving, the more excited I become to see everyone.

Bob gave me a gift certificate to Barnes and Nobles.  My Kindle only handles Amazon e-books.  So.  I made an excellent choice of getting myself some hard-covered books that I had wanted for my Kindle. I didn't want to pay the price for an e-book,  which was $3 less than a hard-covered book.  I couldn't see paying that price and not having a book in my hand to read.  Well.  One of my books has been on the bestseller list for 55 weeks.  It is so good!  I am enjoying it, even though it feels funny to turn pages, rather than click to the next page.  I'm thinking of all the people that I can lend it to.  "Gone Girl" is the name of it, and I can really say those bestselling lists really tell when a book is good.  Just look at the number of weeks they are on the list, and you can't go wrong.  It's a mystery thriller.  Very exciting.  I also got "The Aviator's Wife" a story about Anne Morrow Lindberg.  I've read stories about her and she's a fascinating character.

Epril and Bill came here on Friday and went out to a fishfry with us and Uncle Bob.  Bill is now working days so it makes it easier and nicer  for them to come visit and vice versa.

We went to Bob's son, Jon, and daughter-in-law, Nicole's place for Easter Sunday Dinner.   Jon cooked steak outside on the grill.  I brought a cake (not homemade) from Publix.  We went to church in the morning.  What a beautiful service it was too.  We went to the late regular service, rather than the early contemporary one.  The regular service seemed appropriate.  We sang "Because he Lives' as the ending hymn and there were quite a few tears shed by people (me included).  I love that song.

And Happy Birthday yesterday to Jeanne.  We share the same last name (my maiden name).  I think it's her 83rd birthday.   We found each other on Facebook a year or so ago.

Thank you, Edna, for your card.  It was appreciated.

There's probably more I could write, but we're creatures of habit.  Need to get ready to say "that's it!" to today.  and I'm tired.  It's 10:00.

So that's all the news from this neck o' the woods. What's happenin' in your neighborhood?
